I work in knowledge and data management. It is my job to ensure information is secured, available, and easy for authorized users to find. I am familiar with data management policies; in the workplace, I develop tools and procedures to meet data management requirements. I am also currently working toward a degree in data science.
I am a cult survivor. I grew up in a heavily controlled environment. Information I received was highly curated; it was skewed by a religious agenda and extreme ideology. I know firsthand the effects of people in power controlling information and discrediting all that does not align with their agenda. I deeply understand the value of information and knowledge; the pursuit of truth was my lifeline in leaving the cult lifestyle and mindset.
I am Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian). I know from experience how hard it is to find authentic information about my culture and the history of my ancestors. It has been common throughout history for data and knowledge about minority groups to be valued as lesser than and therefore discarded or overshadowed by the narratives of conquering . Once that information is lost, it can be nearly impossible to make up for it.
Ensuring access to data and information is my kuleana – an opportunity and sacred responsibility.
